Purpose In A Backpack

United States Independent School District

Title 1 District Initiative

Our Purpose in a Backpack initiative in the United States provides supplemental resources to students in grades K-6th to prevent summer learning loss and to ensure that students from low-income families have the opportunity to continue their engagement in reading and math fundamentals during the summer through exciting learning experiences focused on Reading Literacy, Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.).

Purpose in a Backpack presents each child a backpack with reading material appropriate for their grade level, authentic hands-on S.T.E.A.M. learning, sight words, and basic math skills, a passion for innovation, and a love of reading.

The Goal:

The backpack’s goal is to allow K-6th grade students to make authentic and meaningful connections with Reading Literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) while having fun and exciting learning experiences. Furthermore, Purpose in a Backpack offers an excellent opportunity to foster a positive home-school connection.

What is the Initiative?

We accomplish this initiative by providing Title 1 students in summer school with backpacks containing reading books, sight word flash cards and basic math flash cards. Also included are S.T.E.A.M. related activities that will engage the students and keep them learning during their summer vacation.
